A Night Of Blowouts In The Sweet 16

As of this writing it is…

56-33 UNC, and

50-32 Kansas.

If that isn’t a night of blowouts I don’t know what is.  Let’s put these two games in perspective.

We won’t get the UNC/Duke national semifinal I was looking for, but we are looking at some very nice Elite Eight Games.  Ohio State/UNC.  Arizona/UCONN.  Florida/Butler.

Since we have one more game to go (it’s still 8:55 on the east coast) let’s tackle the Ohio State/UNC contest.

I know UNC is killing Marquette right now, but it’s Marquette (sorry guys, but you’re not Al McGuire’s boys.)  So, they’re beating up on a team they should be beating up on.  What happens when they meet big boy Sullinger and his perimeter shooting criminal masterminds in the Elite Eight?

Potentially bad things for the Tar Heels.

I know Sullinger is a freshman and that the Tar Heels star two freshman of their own, but it’s not the freshman factor — it’s the perimeter factor.  Harrison Barnes is a forward (but he’s no Sullinger.)  Even so, we’ll call that a draw.

However, you’ve got Kendall Marshall on the outside with Jon Diebler just sitting there waiting to shoot  tres after tres after tres right in his face.  For me, that’s the matchup.  Diebler’s been at Ohio State forever.  He’s a senior.  He’s played his fair share of college basketball.  As great as Kendall Marshall is (and he is great) he ain’t no Jon Diebler.

I see Diebler just picking the poor kid apart, and THAT my friends is why I don’t trust Roy Williams-led teams.  If Diebler played for UNC they’d have already won the national title, but if Williams has to have a freshman deal with Diebler, he’s screwed.  Remember my theory, unless Williams has all of the country’s best players he can’t succeed.

Sorry Tar Heels fans, I wasnted to be more positive, but I just can’t.  This night of blowouts will turn to tears come Elite Eight time.
