A&M To The SEC Is Official

by Patton on September 27, 2011

Ok, so Texas A&M is in the SEC for good now.  So, let’s talk about what it does to the basketball side of things.  See, the Aggies were able to sort of ride the backs of their stronger Big 12 schedule so that they could get a better chance of making it into the tournament.  That’s why they’ve been sort of successful over the years.

Moving to the SEC might be fine and dandy for their pockets and the football team, but it sucks for the basketball team.  Think of what they are getting themselves into.

They are going to wallow in the dregs of the conference with the boys from Miss. St., Vandy, and Georgia.  There’s also the inevitable losses to teams like Kentucky and Florida.  Oh, and there’s the other teams that aren’t helping their RPI like Tennessee and Auburn.  So, they are just going to kind of sit there and not get much better.  They can’t improve their position because, in basketball, the SEC is not nearly as strong as the old Big 12.

Now, I’m not saying that Texas A&M is really all into basketball and they’re going to feel bad because the basketball team is going to have a hard time, but those are student athletes who are going to school for free.  You’d think that they would be slightly concerned that these kids are going to have a hard time in this conference.

I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing them in any more tournaments anytime soon.  It’s just not probable when they are not in a good geographic position, not in a strong basketball conference, and not really at the top of their game anyways.

Let’s hope that this doesn’t kill A&M basketball.  They played a great spoiler in the Big 12.  However, I don’t know if they can do the same in the SEC.
