Apparently, Bob Knight Can’t Talk To People

by Patton on October 24, 2011

So, Lamar hired Pat Knight (Bobby Knight’s kid) as their basketball coach.  Then, he got two kids that were already verbally committed to play at Lamar to talk to Bob Knight.  I don’t even care why, but the NCAA is looking into it and so is the school.  I guess only coaches and assistants can talk to players, but, I mean, really?  If my dad was Bobby Knight, I’d want him to talk to my recruits, too.  You can call it an unfair advantage, but it is what it is.

Having to do an investigation into the random phone calls of a retired basketball coach seems a little much for even the NCAA.  I wish, at some point, they would sit back and decide that they actually need to allow things to naturally take shape.  For example, let’s say you were a former Duke player, but you were coaching at East Picking Your Nose University in Kansas, and you wanted to have your recruits talk to Coach K for, say, five minutes, about what it means to build a basketball program at a small school–that would be a nice thing.  Moreover, I’m sure Coach K would be happy to do it.

Does the NCAA really need to investigate that, or is that the basketball community coming together and helping itself out internally?  See, that’s what everybody else does.  The whole rest of the universe uses its resources to make things better for its students, employees, families, etc.  It’s just that simple.  To make it seem like something that is not above board is simply not right.

I don’t think you can use this card all the time, but every now and then is ok.  Heck, document it so that the school can see how often he talked to them.  But don’t take more tricks out of a coach’s arsenal.
