Bruce Pearl is going to be labeled with something that might prevent him from coaching college for quite a long time. The NCAA is, according to reports, going to give the “show cause” penalty to Pearl for the things that he did while at Tennessee.
What is that?
Well, it means that if Bruce Pearl is going to be hired by another school, within a three-year period in Pearl’s case, they will have to appear before the committee on infractions and explain to the committee why they want to hire Pearl. Basically, it’s a silly way of saying, “You’ll never work in this town again.”
So, the question is actually–does anybody deserve this penalty?
No.
Listen, there are plenty of schools that have organizational issues that cause them to not do things the right way all the time, but that does not mean that they should have to go before a committee of the NCAA just to tell them WHY they are going to hire a specific person. I mean, what do you say?
“We want to hire this guy because he’s a good fit for us and we think he’ll be successful.”
Moreover, why don’t you, as the NCAA, just say that this guy is banned from coaching for a specific amount of time? Wouldn’t that be cleaner and easier? Wouldn’t you be able to get more done and not have to bring together a panel of people that way? I mean, no school is really going to waste their time with this anymore, and they don’t want to see the committee on infractions for anything.
It’s just silly.
Pearl will coach again, but he’ll come out of nowhere from some school we’ve never heard of and take them to the torunament, and then he’ll get another good job. That’s the way it works.
We just have to wait this time.
