I guess they can. When I thought that the Big 12 was going to be the conference to crumble, I truly believed that no one was going to be itching to go to the Big 12. Well, now the Big East is the conference where everyone is leaving and not enough people are coming in. The Big 12 never had to sue anybody to keep their conference together. The Big East, however, thinks that suing West Virginia is a good idea.
In order to get WVU to comply with the bylaws of the conference, the conference sued in Rhode Island Superior Court. Granted, WVU sued the conference so they could leave, but this is one of those things that the conference has to take as an attack from a child. You take the high road and you say, “whatever,” and then you move on. Allowing yourself to get wrapped up in an argument with a child (and I’m not saying WVU is being childish, but I am saying that the conference has the responsibility to take the high road) is just about as productive as banging your head against the wall.
Plus, it usually ends up making you look REALLY stupid.
Now, any team that might be invited to the Big East has to think of one thing. “When is the conference going to sue US?”
Really, who wants to go to a conference that sues its member institutions rather than actually talk to them and negotiate with them? It’s insane, isn’t it?
So, I guess if the Big East wants to remain small (and on the verge of collapse,) then they’ll continue this legal fight. If they’re being wise, for once, then they’ll drop the suit and give WVU the good old “whatever.”
That’s the only way the conference saves face, because they are NOT saving West Virginia.

Big East is not in the wrong a Contract is a Contract! WVU and all schools singed they would stay for 27 months after they decided to go to another league. This gives the league needed time to add new members and get them into the system. Second they are only suing to protect them selves this is common law Big East did not start the Sue WVU did. Any way I rather Big East move more west people are more about life not money like on the East Coast states.
