The Williams-Calipari Corollary

by Patton on April 3, 2012

I said for many years that Roy Williams could not coach a winner.  Then, he had so much talent that it didn’t matter.  Then he had that much talent again.  Consequently, he’s won two national titles.  Now John Calipari has made the list.  I thought he couldn’t coach a winner, but now I see that he can coach a winner when he has more talent than every other team combined.  So, from now, this will be known as the Williams-Calipari corollary.

And There Goes UNC’s Talent Base

by Patton on March 30, 2012

Three of UNC’s major talents are leaving for the NBA draft.  You have Henson, Barnes, and Marshall all leaving the program for the pros.  For Barnes, it’s a chance to get away from what has been a very disappointing couple of years at UNC.  If you look at Henson, he is ready to go to the NBA, but he’s not really the kind of guy who, I think, will be a major impact player in the pros, but I don’t know that there is much left for him to do.  If they couldn’t win a title this year, I don’t blame these guys for leaving.

UNC Grabs ACC Title

by Patton on March 4, 2012

In a two-team conference, the best you can hope for is that those two teams are playing for everything.  The tournament title, the regular season title, all of it.  Heck, you hope they meet in the national title game.  So, when UNC got the chance to thump Duke to win the ACC title title, they did just that.

88-70 counts as a thumping for those of us who like basketball, and the Tar Heels never had a problem all night.  So, does that make them an odds-on favorite to go into the tourney as a one seed?

Ohio State Smacks Around Duke

by Patton on November 30, 2011

Ohio State University Cheerleaders
Now, this 85-63 beatdown that Duke just got from OSU means nothing in the grand scheme of things, but it does send a message to the rest of college basketball.  It tells teams all over the country that, if you want to tangle with Jared Sullinger and the Buckeyes, you do so at your own peril.

I truly thought that Duke’s system that is devised around a bunch of guys who are all the same but can do different jobs would stump the Buckeyes.  Boy, was I wrong.

Coach K Hits 902 Wins

by Patton on November 13, 2011

Immortality is within Coach K’s grasp as he got to 902 wins yesterday.  Now, it’s only a matter or which win is going to be 903 (probably their next one.)  Then, it’s a question of how much longer he’s going to coach.

We always knew (for a very long time) that Pat Summitt would get to 1000 wins first, but the recent revelations about her health (which are very sad) put further strides in that area in jeopardy.  So, will Coach K coach long enough to reach 1000 and beyond?  In other words, will he stick around long enough to to waters uncharted?

Coach K Says ACC Should Expand

by Patton on October 14, 2011

Duke Tennessee Women's Game
Coach K thinks that an expansion of the ACC is something that really needs to happen.  I can understand the sentiment, but I cannot understand the idea that the ACC can just find people and make it happen.  I know what Coach K wants, but I don’t know if it’s going to be that easy.  Let’s see what he had to say:

“I think you have to continue to explore.  Is 14 the right number? Will 16 be? I don’t know if I’m in the minority, majority — I don’t talk to anybody about this — but (it) seems to me that if you’re going to go 14, then you should go 16.”

Now The Governor’s Involved In Connecticut

by Patton on September 27, 2011

UCONN Huskies
Love the new quotes that are coming from the Governor of Connecticut.  I mean, really?  I know that the school is public, so it’s a public institution under his control, but he’s not the only guy who controls this stuff.  Maybe we could hear from the Chancellor of the University System or something?  Nope.

Instead, we’re hearing from the Governor of a state that likely has bigger problems.  This is what he had to say:

Pitt and Cuse to the ACC Part Deux

by Patton on September 21, 2011

Ok, so Pitt and Syracuse are a comin’, whether we like it or not.  So, let’s see what they might actually do for the ACC since we know the ACC can’t really do anything for them.  This is purely a basketball conversation.

Right now, the ACC has their little “challenge” tournament with the Big Ten.  Adding Syracuse and Pitt to the mix will make that particular event far more interesting.  I’d love to see Pitt play Ohio State and Syracuse play Wisconsin.  Those would be great games during that event.  Plus, it’d be better than some of the garbage we’ve been getting.
