Here We Go Again–Syracuse Assistant Implicated

by Patton on November 18, 2011

I knew, I just knew as soon as the allegations surfaced at Penn State that there would be more people coming out of the woodwork all over the place saying that the same thing happened to them in other places.  The first one has already come out and said that assistant coach Bernie Fine, at Syracuse, molested them in the 70′s, 80′s, and 90′s.

I fear that this is going to spread like wildfire all over college sports just like the Catholic priest scandal did over a decade ago.  I don’t fear it because it’s going to ruin college basketball (it won’t,) but I fear it because I don’t want to think of how many it could actually be.  If this is some kind of hidden subculture in college athletics, then there is a serious problem out there that needs to be dealt with.  This is NOT GOOD.

At the end of the day, people know things.  We saw the reports that JoePa transferred ownership of his house to his wife (some presume to shield himself from liability in a lawsuit,) and now we’ve already got a college basketball coach on the hook.

At some point, every coach knew something, didn’t they?  I’ve heard over and over that it’s a very gossipy profession where the word spreads really fast.  So, if everybody knows, how many people are going to fall when all of these new items surface?

Just imagine how many programs where this could have been bandied about as gossip and nothing was done.  I don’t want to believe that it was widespread, but the fear is there whether we want to admit it or not.

How widespread is this supposed “subculture” that may or may not exist in college athletics on some level?  It’s a frightening thought to say the least.  Frightening and sobering.
